What Is PRP Therapy?

Evidence is less settled for many other uses. A responsible consultation should explain what is known for your particular diagnosis, what remains uncertain, and how PRP compares with physical therapy, medications, activity modification, or other procedures.
Who May Be a Candidate?
PRP may be discussed when pain or loss of function persists despite an appropriate trial of conservative care. A clinician may consider the location and grade of tissue damage, how long symptoms have been present, prior treatments, activity goals, and whether another condition is driving the pain.
PRP is not automatically appropriate for every painful joint or tendon. Active infection, certain blood or platelet disorders, significant anemia, some medications, pregnancy, and other medical considerations may change whether or when treatment is advisable. Your medical history and medication list should be reviewed before scheduling a procedure.
Preparing for a PRP Appointment
- Bring relevant imaging, prior treatment records, and a current medication and supplement list.
- Ask whether ultrasound or another form of image guidance will be used.
- Discuss medications that affect bleeding or inflammation; do not stop prescribed medication without direction from the prescribing clinician.
- Arrange your schedule around any recommended temporary activity restriction.
- Clarify the rehabilitation plan, follow-up schedule, expected cost, and whether more than one treatment may be considered.
What to Expect During Recovery
After PRP therapy, you may experience:
- Temporary soreness or stiffness near the injection site
- A gradual response rather than immediate pain relief

Recovery instructions are not identical across PRP protocols. Your provider should give you diagnosis-specific guidance about movement, exercise, physical therapy, pain medication, and follow-up. Contact the treating office promptly for worsening pain, fever, drainage, marked swelling, or another unexpected symptom.
Potential Risks and Limitations
Because PRP is prepared from your own blood, allergic reaction to the platelet product is uncommon. Injection-related risks still exist, including pain, bruising, bleeding, infection, irritation of nearby structures, or a temporary flare in symptoms. Some patients receive little or no meaningful benefit, and PRP does not reverse every structural injury or eliminate the need for other care.
